privacy policy

askbestie ("we", "our", "the app") is an ai-powered chat companion. this policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and how you can control it.

what we collect

device identifier. when you first open the app, we generate a random id (uuid) to identify your device. this is not linked to your real identity.

your name. if you enter your name during onboarding, we store it locally and send it with your messages so bestie can use it naturally.

messages and images. your text messages and any screenshots you share are sent to our servers to generate responses. we store your full conversation history so bestie can reference earlier messages in the same conversation.

memories. after each conversation, we extract key facts about your life (names of people, ongoing situations, etc.) so bestie can remember context across conversations — like a real friend would. free users can store up to 15 memories; premium subscribers can store significantly more.

preferences. we store your bestie's name, personality vibe, accent color, your age (if provided), and your timezone. these personalize your experience and are stored on our servers.

apple id. if you sign in with apple, we store your apple user id to link your subscription. we do not collect your email or name from apple sign-in.

push notifications. if you enable notifications, we store your device's push notification token to send you messages from bestie. you can disable notifications at any time in your device settings.

usage data. we track anonymous usage events (messages sent, features used, subscription events) to improve the app. we do not track your location.

third-party services

all third-party services listed above are required to maintain data protection standards equivalent to or exceeding our own. your personal data is only shared with these services as necessary to provide the app's functionality.

how we use your data

we do not sell your data. we do not use your messages to train ai models. we do not share your personal data with advertisers.

safety monitoring

to protect our users, we log conversations where crisis-related resources are provided (e.g., suicide hotline numbers). these logs are used solely to identify users who may be in danger and to improve our safety systems. they are not shared with third parties except as required by law or to protect someone's safety.

data retention

your messages, conversations, and memories are stored indefinitely until you delete your account. when you delete your account, all your data is permanently removed — messages, conversations, memories, and your user record.

deleting your data

you can delete your account and all associated data at any time from the settings screen in the app. deletion is immediate and irreversible.

your rights

you can request a copy of your data, correct inaccuracies, or delete your account at any time from the app's settings or by emailing us. if you are located in the european union or california, you may have additional rights under gdpr or ccpa — contact us and we will accommodate your request.

children's privacy

askbestie is not intended for users under 16. we do not knowingly collect data from children. if you believe a child is using the app, please contact us.

security

we use industry-standard security practices including encrypted connections (https/tls), server-side access controls, and row-level security on our database. however, no system is 100% secure.

changes

we may update this policy from time to time. we'll update the date at the top when we do.
