askbestie ("the app") is an ai-powered chat companion made by AskBestie, Inc. ("we", "our"). this policy explains what data we collect through the app and our website (askbestie.co), how we use it, who we share it with, and how you can control it.

the short version

• your conversations are sent to our ai provider (anthropic) to generate bestie's replies, and stored on our servers so she can remember you.
• we don't sell your data, and we don't use your messages for advertising.
• we use analytics and advertising-measurement tools to understand how people find and use the app.
• you can delete your account and data anytime.
• askbestie is for adults 18+.

what we collect in the app

device and account identifiers. when you first open the app, we generate a random id to identify your device. if you sign in with apple, we store your apple user id to link your subscription. we do not collect your email or name from apple sign-in.

your profile. the name you give us, your birthday (we store your age and zodiac sign), your bestie's name, personality vibe and color, and your timezone.

messages and images. your messages and any screenshots or photos you send. we store your full conversation history, and we store images in private storage, so bestie can reference earlier messages.

memories. after conversations, we use ai to extract key facts about your life (people's names, ongoing situations, things you care about) so bestie can remember context across conversations.

sensitive information. people often talk to bestie about their relationships, mental health, sexuality, and other sensitive topics. anything you share is processed the same way as your other messages, to generate replies and memories. by sharing it, you consent to us processing it for these purposes. please only share what you're comfortable with.

notifications. if you allow notifications, we store your device's push token and send you messages from bestie, which may be written by ai and reference your conversations. you can turn them off anytime in your device settings.

purchases. your subscription status and purchase history, through apple and revenuecat. we never see your payment card details.

usage and analytics data. events about how you use the app (for example, messages sent, features used, screens viewed, subscription events, your age and your bestie's name), plus device information. this data does not include the text of your messages.

advertising measurement. we use tiktok and appsflyer to measure which ads and campaigns lead people to install the app. these tools may collect device information, ip address, and in-app events. if you allow tracking when ios asks, they may also receive your device's advertising identifier. you can change this anytime in ios settings under privacy & security > tracking.

we do not collect your precise location.

what we collect on our website

if you join a waitlist (for example, for android), we collect your email address and store it with the waitlist. if you apply to the creator program, we collect what you put in the application (your name, email, social handles, follower range, video links, and anything you write) and use it only to review your application and contact you about it. we also use analytics on our website to see how visitors use it, including device type and browser information, and, if you join a waitlist, your email address. our website analytics don't use cookies or store anything on your device.

how we use your data

• to generate bestie's replies and remember context across conversations
• to send you notifications you've allowed
• to manage your subscription and message limits
• to keep the app safe, including detecting signs of crisis so bestie can share support resources
• to understand how the app is used and improve it
• to measure our marketing
• to contact you about a waitlist you joined
• to comply with the law and protect people's safety

human review. to improve bestie's quality and safety, our small team may review conversations, including through ai-generated summaries, and may keep internal notes used to personalize your experience. we access conversations only for these purposes.

who we share data with

• anthropic (ai provider): receives your messages, images, memories, and profile details to generate replies, extract memories, and write notifications. under anthropic's commercial terms, this data is not used to train their models, and is retained only as described in anthropic's data retention policy.
• supabase (database and storage): stores your account, conversations, messages, images, memories, and waitlist emails.
• apple: delivers push notifications and processes payments.
• revenuecat: manages subscriptions and in-app purchases.
• posthog: product analytics for the app and website.
• tiktok and appsflyer: advertising measurement and attribution.

we may also share data if required by law, or if we believe in good faith it's necessary to protect someone's safety, and with a successor if askbestie is part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.

we do not sell your personal data, and we do not share your messages with advertisers. under some u.s. state laws (like california's), sharing device information with advertising-measurement partners may count as "sharing" for advertising purposes. you can opt out by declining tracking in ios settings, or by emailing us.

safety

when bestie's safety systems detect signs that you may be in crisis, she is designed to share crisis resources for your region, based on your timezone. conversations are not monitored by humans in real time, no one is alerted, and we cannot contact emergency services on your behalf. if you're in danger, please contact your local emergency number or visit findahelpline.com.

where your data is stored

askbestie and our service providers are based in the united states, and your data is processed and stored there. if you use the app from outside the u.s., your data will be transferred to and processed in the u.s.

data retention

we keep your profile, messages, images, and memories until you delete your account. we keep waitlist emails until the waitlist ends or you ask us to remove yours. some records may be kept longer where needed for legal, security, or accounting reasons (for example, purchase records), and data held by our service providers is kept according to their own retention policies.

deleting your data

you can delete your account from the settings screen in the app, or by emailing hey@askbestie.co from any address with your request. deletion permanently removes your profile, conversations, messages, images, and memories from our database and storage. it is irreversible.

your rights

you can ask for a copy of your data, ask us to correct or delete it, or opt out of analytics and advertising measurement by emailing hey@askbestie.co. depending on where you live (for example the european union, the uk, or california and other u.s. states), you may have additional rights under laws like the gdpr or ccpa, including the right to complain to your local data protection authority. we won't treat you differently for exercising your rights.

if you're in the eu or uk: we process your data to provide the service you asked for (contract), with your consent (for example, sensitive information and tracking), and for our legitimate interests in keeping the app safe and improving it.

age requirement

askbestie is only for people 18 and older. we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18. if we learn that a user is under 18, we will delete their account and data. if you believe someone under 18 is using the app, please contact us at hey@askbestie.co.

security

we use industry-standard security practices, including encrypted connections (https/tls), private image storage, server-side access controls, and row-level security on our database. however, no system is 100% secure.

changes

we may update this policy from time to time. we'll update the date at the top, and for material changes we'll let you know in the app or on our website.
